What Is Diamond Carat?

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, not its size or visual appearance. One carat equals 0.20 grams, and precise measurements are taken to the thousandth of a carat to ensure accuracy. At Canadian Expert Jewellery, every diamond is sourced to maximise its brilliance and beauty, rather than prioritising carat weight alone.

Diamond Carat Charts

Carat weight can appear differently depending on the diamond’s shape, including round brilliant, princess, pear, oval, cushion, marquise, emerald, radiant, or heart. A diamond with a higher carat weight may not always appear larger, and two diamonds of the same carat can look different if one is cut deeper than the other.

It’s important to remember that carat weight does not necessarily indicate visual size. The illustrations and charts are provided for proportional reference only and do not represent the exact appearance of a diamond of that carat weight.

How Carat Affects Price

Price generally increases with carat weight, but the cost is also influenced by cut, colour, and clarity. Small differences in carat can have a significant effect on price, making it important to balance weight with other factors to achieve a diamond that looks beautiful and provides excellent value.

Is a Higher Carat Weight Better?

Carat weight alone does not determine a diamond’s value. Two diamonds of the same carat can differ significantly in price depending on their clarity, colour, and cut. When these factors are considered, it becomes clear that large diamonds with exceptional quality are rare and highly sought after.
