What Is Diamond Colour?

Diamond colour measures the natural tint present in a white diamond. Most diamonds have a slight yellow or brown hue, and the closer a diamond is to being completely colourless, the rarer and more valuable it becomes. Diamonds are graded against a master set and assigned a letter from D (completely colourless) to Z (light yellow), helping you understand the stone’s purity and brilliance.

Diamond Colour Chart

At Canadian Expert Jewellery, we carefully select engagement diamonds within the colourless and near-colourless range to ensure maximum brilliance and beauty. This means we focus on diamonds graded D, E, F, G, H, and I on the diamond colour scale. Any borderline stones are assigned the more conservative grade to maintain consistent quality.

Colour Grades:

  • D–F: Colourless – No detectable colour; exceptionally rare and valuable.
  • G–I: Near Colourless – Slight colour visible under close inspection, but appears colourless to the naked eye.
  • K–M: Faint Yellow – Noticeable warmth in colour, less rare than colourless stones.
  • N–R: Very Light Yellow – Colour visible to the naked eye; affects overall brilliance.
  • S–Z: Light Yellow – Strong yellow tint; typically not used for engagement rings in our collection.

Note: These standards refer only to individually registered engagement diamonds set in specific ring styles.

Does Diamond Colour Matter?

Colour is the second most important of the 4Cs, as it directly influences a diamond’s overall appearance. Diamonds with lower colour grades can appear slightly yellow, rather than the brilliant white that maximizes sparkle. At Canadian Expert Jewellery, we carefully select diamonds that maintain exceptional colour and brilliance, avoiding stones with excessive fluorescence that can create a milky or less vibrant look in natural light.
