Diamond clarity measures the purity and rarity of a diamond, based on the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes visible under 10× magnification. A diamond is considered flawless if no inclusions or blemishes can be seen at this level of magnification. Diamond inclusions are internal characteristics or “flaws” that occur naturally within a stone. External imperfections are called blemishes. Both affect clarity, but high-quality diamonds are carefully selected to minimize visible imperfections. At Canadian Expert Jewellery, we prioritize stones with exceptional clarity for every engagement ring and fine jewellery piece.
Clarity Grades:
- FL (Flawless) – No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10× magnification.
- IF (Internally Flawless) – No internal inclusions; only minor surface blemishes may be present.
- VVS1, VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included) – Minute inclusions difficult even for a trained gemologist to see under 10× magnification.
- VS1, VS2 (Very Slightly Included) – Minor inclusions visible under 10× magnification but typically not seen with the naked eye.
- SI1, SI2 (Slightly Included) – Noticeable inclusions under 10× magnification; may be visible to the naked eye in some cases.
- I1, I2, I3 (Included) – Inclusions are obvious under 10× magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance.
