what is a diamond cut?

Cut is often considered the most influential of the 4Cs, because it determines how a diamond reflects and returns light. A diamond’s cut grade is defined by its symmetry, proportions, and polish, all working together to create its overall sparkle. More than any other characteristic, cut controls the diamond’s fire, brilliance, and beauty — which is why we always prioritize exceptional light performance over carat weight.

Why Is Diamond Cut Important?

A diamond’s cut is the key to its sparkle. Even with high color and clarity, a poorly cut diamond can look flat or dull. A well-cut stone, however, is engineered to capture, reflect, and refract light in a way that creates maximum brilliance and fire.

At Canadian Expert Jewellery, we’re committed to sourcing and crafting diamonds with exceptional proportions and precision. Our focus is always on light performance and beauty, ensuring every round brilliant engagement diamond meets the highest standards for symmetry, polish, and overall cut quality.

Diamond Cut Chart

Most grading laboratories classify diamond cut using five standard categories: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. These grades reflect how effectively a diamond handles light, which directly impacts its brilliance and fire.

Diamonds cut too deep or too shallow allow light to leak through the sides or bottom, reducing their sparkle. Misaligned or uneven facets can further disrupt the way light travels through the stone, diminishing its overall beauty. A well-cut diamond, by contrast, is carefully proportioned to return light through the top of the gem, creating the lively radiance people love.

Types of Diamond Cuts

All our diamonds are masterfully cut to maximize brilliance. There are three main cutting styles used to craft each diamond shape:

Brilliant Cut

Designed for maximum light reflection, the brilliant cut uses numerous carefully angled facets to create exceptional sparkle and fire. This style is most commonly seen in round and modified round diamonds and is ideal for those seeking dazzling brilliance in every angle.

Step Cut

Featuring parallel, rectangular facets, the step cut emphasizes clarity and elegance over intense sparkle. Often used in emerald and baguette diamonds, this style produces a sophisticated, understated look that highlights the diamond’s transparency and depth.

Mixed Cut

Combining the sparkle of brilliant cuts with the clean lines of step cuts, mixed cuts balance brilliance, shape, and style. They are commonly used in fancy-shaped diamonds such as princess, radiant, or asscher cuts, offering a unique blend of light performance and geometric elegance.
